Objective: Fill the 9×9 grid so that each row, column, and 3×3 box contains the numbers 1-9 exactly once.
Despite using numbers, Sudoku requires zero mathematical skills. It's purely a logic puzzle about patterns and elimination. You could play with letters, symbols, or colors - numbers are just convenient!
New to Sudoku? Start here! Beginner mode features Master Sudo, your friendly guide who teaches you solving techniques step-by-step. He shows you which numbers can go in each cell and explains why, making learning Sudoku fun and easy!
Perfect for casual players and those building confidence. Easy puzzles have more given numbers (28-32) and can be solved using basic techniques like scanning and elimination. Great for your daily brain warm-up!
For experienced players seeking a real challenge! Fewer given numbers (22-26) means you'll need advanced techniques like naked pairs, hidden singles, and X-wings. Expect to spend 20-40 minutes on each puzzle.
The ultimate Sudoku challenge! With only 17-21 given numbers, these diabolical puzzles require expert techniques like swordfish, coloring, and complex chain analysis. Only for master solvers who love a serious mental workout!
Click the pencil icon to enter notes mode. Mark potential candidates in cells using small numbers. This is essential for tracking possibilities and using advanced solving techniques. You can add or remove notes at any time.
Stuck? Click the hint button! Our intelligent system finds a cell with the fewest possibilities and fills it in for you. Use hints strategically - they're limited to encourage learning! (Note: Hints are disabled in Beginner mode where Master Sudo guides you.)
Track your solving time with our built-in timer. Auto-starts when you click your first cell, or start it manually. Need a break? Hit the pause button - perfect for those inevitable interruptions!
Every day brings a fresh, unique puzzle at your chosen difficulty level! Daily challenges are the same for everyone worldwide, so you can compare times with friends. Complete the daily challenge to maintain your streak!
Unsure if you're on the right track? Click Validate to check your current answers. The game will highlight any conflicts without telling you the solution. Mistakes are only counted when you validate, so feel free to experiment!
Made a mistake? No problem! Use undo/redo to step backward and forward through your solving history. Try different approaches risk-free!
The most basic technique. Scan each row, column, and box to see which numbers are already present. If a row has 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, the empty cell must be 9!
When only one number can go in a cell, fill it in! This happens when a cell is constrained by numbers in its row, column, and box.
If a number can only go in one place within a row, column, or box, it must go there. For example, if 7 can only fit in one cell of a box, that cell must be 7.
Use notes mode to mark all possible candidates for empty cells. As you fill in numbers, eliminate them from other cells' notes. When a cell has only one candidate left, fill it in!
If two cells in a row, column, or box can only contain the same two numbers (e.g., both can only be 3 or 7), those numbers can be eliminated from other cells in that group.
If two numbers can only appear in two specific cells within a row, column, or box (even if those cells have other candidates), all other candidates can be eliminated from those two cells.
An advanced pattern where a number appears as a candidate in exactly two positions in two different rows, and these positions align in the same columns. This allows elimination of that candidate from other cells in those columns.
Extensions of X-Wing pattern matching across three or four rows/columns. These are rare but powerful elimination techniques for Xtreme puzzles.
Sudoku's roots trace back to 18th century Switzerland with "Latin Squares," but the modern game was developed in the 1970s by American architect Howard Garns under the name "Number Place." It gained massive popularity in Japan in the 1980s, where it received the name "Sudoku" (数独) meaning "single number."
The puzzle exploded onto the global stage in 2004 when British newspaper The Times began publishing it. Within a year, Sudoku became a worldwide phenomenon, appearing in thousands of newspapers and spawning books, apps, and competitions. Today, Sudoku is played by hundreds of millions of people across the globe!
